Water Testing
About 40% of Vermonters get their water from private wells. Vermont has excellent resources for water testing. My fee is $40 (covers collection, paperwork, and drop off of water samples to the lab) plus the price of the selected water tests as specified on the VT DOH site. Keep in mind some tests can take up to 18 days to process by the lab.
The Vermont Department of Health recommends the following testing schedule for wells or springs:
- Gross alpha radiation screening test (Kit RA): every five years – $45
- Total coliform/E. coli test (Kit A): every year – $14
- Inorganic chemical test (Kit C): every five years – $100
- Example: Kits RA, A, C – $159 + $40 (service fee) = $199

Radon Testing
The Vermont DOH states: “One in seven Vermont homes has elevated levels of radon. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that has no color, smell or taste. Smoking and radon are the leading causes of lung cancer. Unless you test for it, there is no way of knowing if radon is present in your home.”
The test utilizes a professional continuous radon monitor that is calibrated and certified for real estate transactions. A short-term radon test runs for a minimum of 48 hours. The radon monitor takes a sample at a cadence of once per hour. For accurate test results, a closed environment is required.
